Medical products are sterilized in order to get rid of pathogenic germs, such as viruses, bacteria, fungi. Sterilization is necessary for the medical products used, for example, during surgery and other invasive actions. Medical underwear and clothing are among them.
Gexa products are gas sterilized with ethylene oxide (C2H4O), which is a powerful poison for most of the known microorganisms. Such method is used when a product cannot be heat treated. Nonwoven materials lose their properties and may deform when heated. That is why gas sterilization has been preferred by Gexa.
10%-C2H4O and 90%-CO2 gas mixture is used for sterilization. Such proportion is not explosive, yet sufficient for the purposes.
Gas sterilization is advantageous since gas is a volatile substance that can penetrate a product folds and pass though the material. This ensures sterilization high quality. Moreover, the gas doesn’t have any impact on the material properties: 350-450 mg/l ethylene oxide concentration has no impact on material physical properties, leaving low residual levels after sterilization.
The procedure of products gas sterilization is simple:
- The products, in paper or polyethylene gas-permeable bags, are placed in a special gas chamber – sterilizer.
- The chamber is sealed and fed with gas.
- The gas concentration is constantly controlled by indicators of the actual pressure inside the chamber and the actual mass of net ethylene oxide entering the chamber at each sterilization stage.
- Placing of test strips at prescribed locations within the chamber at each sterilization stage is an extra control method. The test strips change of colour after the treatment identifies the proper execution of the procedure.
- After sterilization, which normally lasts for 16 hours, the products undergo aeration in a special room. This allows removal of the sterilizing substance toxic residues.
- The products are moved for storage and subsequent delivery to the client.
Gexa products sterilization is conducted by the company Gassteril, existing since 2008. The company operates in accordance with the Russian and international standards.
The sterilized products should be stored as indicated on the package.
