The world before polypropylene: “wool” trees and the “white gold”

The history of polypropylene starts approximately in the middle of the last century. It seems such a long time ago. Yet, in terms of the world history, it is just a blink. So what had we had before polypropylene came to power? Cotton, of course!

It is this plant Herodotus described as “wild trees whose seeds can be used to get wool, which exceeds in beauty and quality the wool derived off sheep”. This note dates back to 445 B.C.

Herodotus misled his contemporaries, so many people actually believed in the “wool” trees existence. However, the cotton popularity grew, and more and more peoples started its routine usage.
In fact, the history of cotton fabric started much earlier!

The very first cotton products were founf in Mexico. They were made in 5800 B.C. Cotton was also used by the Incas – cotton threads, found where they lived, date back to 2500 B.C.

In the 7th century B.C., India was the main territory where cotton was cultivated and used. And it is only the 4th century B.C. when cotton started spreading in Europe. In the 8th century A.D., the material found its way to Spain, and they started producing cotton fabrics in Milano and Venice in the 14th century, while production in England began only since the18th century.

Cotton entered the Russian territory by the 16th century, while the active production of cotton fabrics commenced only in the 19th century.

As of today, the cotton fabrics are the most ubiquitous, and their production costs considerably less than in the ancient times.

Nevertheless, in terms of safety, when used for medical purposes, cotton is a loser compared to nonwoven materials. In the first turn, this is due to its naturality – bacteria and infection are quite comfortable on cotton fabrics, which may result in a doctor or a patient getting infected.

Bacteria don’t like being on nonwoven materials, so there is no pathogenic germ generation. Therefore, while we like cotton very much generally, for the medical purposes – we prefer nonwoven materials.
