Toropets is one of the oldest towns in the Tver region. It was mentioned in records for the first time in 1074. Toropets is in the list of the 30 oldest towns in Russia. The place was on the ancient commercial route from Scandinavia to the Black Sea. Generally speaking, the town led an active life and was well known as a trading and handicraft center until the 19th century.
The great Russsian duke Alexander Nevsky, a grandson of the Toropets duke Mstislav Udatny, was married in a Toropets church.
There were more than 20 acting churches in Toropets in the 19th century. Today, a significant part of them still exist, in the original or restored condition.
The Toropets district is a birthplace of many famous persons; for example, the great composer M.P. Musorgsky was born in the village Karevo around here. Besides, it is admirals’ birthplace – 21 were born here!
In the early 1990s, Toropets district was recognized by UNESCO as one of the eco-friendliest places in Europe.
Today, there are several large enterprises operating in Toropets, providing the citizens of the town and its outskirts with jobs.
